A CALL TO ARMS

Welcome to the fourth instalment of our Crusade against all that isn't Metal. I have a desire to rant again, I, as many of
you know, have taken it on myself to help rebuild Metal to what it was before. Metalheads are not "drugged-up Lethargic
Morons" we are proud soldiers of the greatest inspirational force since the dawn of life on this planet. Many thanks to Cliff
from Agro's cool comments, "If it's not Metal, it's Homosexual".

Metal warriors gather for attack!!!! We have seen so many great Metal bands thundering their anthems of Steel. Let us all
stand proud for victory is in our hand. Remember it doesn't matter how many CD's, t-shirts or record's you've got, it's what
is inside you that makes you a true Metalhead. Keep on Crusading for all that is Metal

Due to a distance, time and money problem Dark Ages will divide it's crusade for Metal. I "Lunatic" will carry on with all my
previous efforts but I will downsize them to be more manageable for myself. The Crusader will carry on regardless but it's
concentration will shift from a print fanzine to a web-zine. All commercial aspects will be removed from our workings and
thus we will no longer be accepting any advertising. All material received will still be justly and fairly reviewed on the basis
of it's "Metal Power" and reviews and interviews will be published on my website. Mocke will continue his Crusade for
Metal by releasing a printed news letter called "Kingdom of Steel". This news letter will mostly only cover South African
Metal bands and will only be available when he has the money and time to release it. No money will be charged. May
the Gods be with us all!

HAIL TO METAL !!!!!

"We shall all die and I fear it not. In a way we are all dying, for indeed life is a slow death. We grow old, fade away, grow
weak. I say let the weak die. My time shall come when I am weak, as with all the others. If I am shot in the back, I'm a fool
not to foresee that a sniper may lurk in the shadows behind me. If I am stabbed to death with a knife or dagger, I am a
weaker warrior than my foe. If I am poisoned, I am a fool to let my enemy near my food. If a car hits me, I am too
unobservant to deserve survival. If I die of disease it is my destiny. Alas, If anybody wants me dead let them try; I enjoy
a good fight and if they win (which they won't! HAH!), they win - So what? I'll die fighting. Reincarnation in
Valhalla awaits. Eternal Strife!"
Varg Vikernes - Count Grishnack (Slayer 'zine, Vol. X Pg. 25")

==================================================

He who refuses to take part in modern mediocrity will forever stand alone, an outcast. He is the bringer of change, changes
that instil fear in all who go with fashion's flow. Their power comes from others, not from within. They are false! Woe unto
them for the bringers of change have banded together. The time is now! We cannot be stopped! We are Riding up, riding
hard on the will of the people. The battle rages - Choose your side.

DEATH TO FALSE METAL

FIGHTING THE WORLD

THE CRUSADER IS A TOTALLY INDEPENDENT, INFORMAL EXPRESSION OF THE OPINION OF ONE
ABSOLUTELY NARROW MINDED METALHEAD, AND OF CONTRIBUTING WRITERS. IF YOU DISAGREE
WITH THE OPINIONS EXPRESSED IN THESE PAGES, I DON'T GIVE A FUCK...

Scene Report

Groinchurn / Pothole / Sacraphyx / Hog Hoggidy Hog
Metalfest '98 / The Purple Turtle (Cape Town) / 29 September 1998

I can say with absolute certainty that Metal is alive and well in Cape Town if this concert is anything to go by. A good few
hundred people turned out for what was, unquestionably the Metal event of the year.

First up on the night was local Death Metal gods Sacraphyx. They turned in a spirited performance that saw them go one
step closer to regaining their position as one of South Africa's leading Death Metal merchants. It would seem that the new
line up has now stabilised and they are ready to deliver the kind of performances that their fans demand. Brutal,
uncompromising and in your face. As always stalwarts Alex, on guitar, and Tom, on vocals, delivered the goods with
fearsome energy and precision. The rest of the band performed like their lives depended on it, showing their obvious
commitment to the Sacraphyx cause. The Power and grace of newer songs like "Psycho" and "Afterbirth" set them apart
from just being another good generic death Metal band. On the strength of this performance their new CD is going to be
awesome. A band of great promise.

Hog Hoggidy Hog was a bit out of place on this bill, but with their newer "hardcore" tinged material they more than stood
their ground. George, always the devil's demented ringleader, got the crowd thrashing in no time at all. They peppered their
set with old favourites from their debut CD "Fishpaste & Vibe", glorious new material and silly covers like "United
Porkchops", a take on the old SOD standard "United Forces". The Hog fan base, as usual, supported their band with their
peculiar brand of loyalty. The new stuff seems to be moving away from their older more ska-punk orientated sound to a far
harder, but no less melodic, new school Metal direction.

Groinchurn? Fucking Hell! This was something else. I don't think Cape Town has ever seen a band with the sonic ferocity
of Groinchurn. Talk about focus and sheer musical brutality. It's not often that a band with a reputation like Groinchurn's
lives up to it. Or annihilates it with consummate ease. This is a band at the peak of it's powers. Crisp, clear sound helped
embellish what was already an outstanding physical performance. Mark on Guitar was a whirlwind of hyperactive energy
and ear piercing riffs while Christo's growl matched his superhuman bass playing note for note. Add to this Sergio's
thunderous skin pounding and you have the stuff legends are made of. A lot of the older material from "Sixtimesnine" was
aired to the delight of the hardcore Groinchurn fanatics. Although unfamiliar, the newer songs also got a good reception.
The new album is going to kill. There's nothing more to be said. It was that good. Cape Town salutes Groinchurn. Come
back soon.

Which brings us to Pothole. Would they be able to match the intensity of what had gone before? As usual they chose the
difficult route by starting with a brand new instrumental. A very brave move considering the circumstances. A huge sound
with cascading riff upon riff, embellished with Davey's Herculean drumming unfolded. A promising start. Next up were
a selection of favourites from their debut CD "Force-fed hatred". Their solid performance was rewarded with excellent
crowd reaction. Adam, as always, dictated things from centre stage with his natural good humour. Noel, Guitar, and
Martin, bass, musically kept things roaring along at a furious pace. Unfortunately strings broke and too many covers were
played to make it a truly memorable performance. It must be said that Pothole originals do stand up favourably with their
choice of covers. And I mean that as a compliment. Pothole can and will do a lot better judging by their new material.
However, they need to tighten up their live performances, because only then will they truly be a world class act. They have
the songs, the CD and the opportunity. Now they only need the focus and the will.

Mention also needs to be made of David van Blerck's brilliant work at the sound desk as well as Uncle Vinnie's
entertaining interludes between bands. The compere from hell, indeed. Local and international underground CD's and
T-shirts were on sale so if you missed out, it's your loss. This evening made a mockery of the patronising debate in the
national press about whether Metal in South Africa's dead or not. It looked very much alive from where I was standing.
All this for only R20.00 at the door. Amazing.

Hennie, Way Cool Records.

BOOK REVIEW

LORDS OF CHAOS - The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground
Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind
Feral House 1998
ISBN 0-922915-48-2

This has got to be the best book I have ever read. What every Metalhead has been waiting for, a history, an explanation
and research into the Soap Opera that was the Norwegian Black Metal scene. All sides are presented and argued with
analytical precision, all attempts possible are made too ensure an objective as possible view of the happenings leading up to
and culminating in the church burnings and killings by members of the Black Metal underground and the eventual
incarceration of some of the surviving members. All viewpoints are presented by the use of explanation, investigations,
interviews and clarified by the liberal use of pictures.

The book starts off with a general investigation of the origins of modern Satanism and it's place in music, especially
Heavy Metal. Metal History is traced from its earliest beginnings though the rise and fall of thrash, the animation of Death
Metal and it's apparent demise through to the emergence of the first wave of black Metal bands.

Lords of Chaos never falls into the trap of one-sidedness (although I detect a slight favouring of Count Grishnack's story,
over that of the followers of Euronymous, yet I might be wrong). Each idea or theory brought up is investigated in detail to
try and answer the question of why this erupted in Norway and not in the Democratic Republic of Congo (or whatever).
I gained many important insight's, and although I have been following the development of the movement for many years,
it's astonishing to me how little I actually knew and most of what I had heard was all rumour.

If you are looking for the ultimate informational guide to the world that is Black Metal, or if you are just into a very
entertaining and thought provoking read, then look no further than "Lords of Chaos". Find out more at
www.feralhouse.com, e-mail feral house at cult@feralhouse.com. The book is available from the following address,
as well as a free catalogue, Feral House, 2532 Lincoln Blvd., # 359, Venice, CA 90291, U.S.A. In South Africa the book
is available from Exclusive Books.

DEMO REVIEWS

CRISIS
SAVED FROM EXTINCTION
CRASS MENAGERIE
(10 BATTLE AXES)

I doubt this tape would ever leave my Hi-Fi, If I wasn't so scared I would wear it out. This is absolutely amazing!
Consisting of four tracks from their 1983 EP called "Armed to the Teeth", Two unreleased tracks and two tracks from the
1985 album "Kick it Out". To me this music cannot die, It's just as relevant to me as what it would have been, if I knew it
when it was released. 8 tracks of pure Metal, songs about life, babes and METAL. How can those things ever not
be relevant? Anybody out there got any copies of their other albums to sell me? See my review of their 7" for more info.
Available from: Jeb Branin, SUU Box 9548, Cedar City, UT 84720, U.S.A. (lunatic)

FAG-BASHING MANIA
COMP. TAPE 1998
I.F.S.R.
(9 BATTLE AXES)

This tape receives an automatic 9 Battle Axes for humour, as well as for having the balls to stand up to a corrupt, sexually
deviant, politically correct Society. What's cool as well is that this tape specifically targets bi-sexual, Alternative and Punk
music for immediate extermination. 11 bands and 13 tracks fill up this compilation's 20 minutes. Totally underground
xeroxed, home-dubbed and free except for cost and postage. Includes Festering Puke, Meat Shits and Vomit Spawn as
well as a free mini 'zine. Send a blank tape and $2 to Irritating Fucking Shit Records, P.O.Box 6046, Hudson, FL
34674, U.S.A. (Lunatic)

FUNERAL GOD
DEMO 1
DARK AGES PRODUCTIONS
(9 BATTLE AXES)

I suppose my obvious biases towards this release make me unfit to review it, but I love it so much I feel compelled too.
Pretoria's own Funeral God bring forth their first brutal offering to the tables of Metal. And what a feast it is. Nothing
original here, but the classics are usually the most appetising. Track one, Blessed By the Devil, showcases a strong German
speed influence ala "old" Kreator, as evidenced by the picking style, although at a slightly less frantic pace. Track 2,
Insomnia, is a slow Death number with one of the most instantly infectious grooves I've ever heard, screw the nineties bands.
Track three, Abomination, with it's thrash riffs and acoustic parts (played on electric) belies softer influences as well. If you
want to wear your influences (Death, Black, Speed and Thrash METAL) on your sleeve, do it as well as
Funeral God. (Lunatic)

SUICIDAL WINDS
'DEFINITELY WAR' DEMO '98
INDEPENDENT
(9 BATTLE AXES)

This is the second time I have been privileged enough to be called upon to review one of this bands demo's. (See
my review of their previous demo in Scripture 2). Once again delivering a potent piece of retro death thrash, Suicidal
Winds Kill. It's really surprising to me that they haven't been signed to a real underground label yet, I thought this style of
music was so popular at the moment? If you are into demo's, then this is a prime example of a band that will eventually
graduate to a legendary status. Label's take note! Listen to "Rapehammer" and "Arrival of Darkness" and you too will
convert to the ways of the wind. C/O Peter Haglund, Talmansvagen 34, 451 75 Uddevalla, Sweden. (Lunatic)

IRON RAINBOW
NEVER SETTLE FOR LESS THAN METAL
BAD POSTURE RECORDINGS
(9 BATTLE AXES)

It's 1983 and I've just received a very cool demo from IRON RAINBOW. Straight Metal, culled from the likes of the last
remaining NWOBHM bands. Lyrics warning against evil, or is it promoting evil, it's so subtle (for Metal) that you just don't
know. The type's of Riff that will undoubtedly be used by Manowar on their upcoming album "Hail to England", most
probably on the track "Army of the Immortals". OK, so it's not 1983, but so what; if something works don't fix it! This is the
way Metal was supposed to sound! The tape title got me thinking (scary thing), WHY do I try to find something good in
an album that obviously was not made by a Metalhead, If it's crap it's crap, end of story. Iron Rainbow are not crap,
end of story. If you are a Metalhead, you will feel the power emanating from Iron Rainbow's 16 minute, three track tape.

ABHORRENCE
ASCENSION
INDEPENDENT
(9 BATTLE AXES)

"How do I love thee, let me count the ways....." If you want to hear that. DON'T BUY THIS DEMO! What is wrong with
the Brazilians, what makes them so violent. Some of the most brutal bands on the planet are coming from Brazil. I think
what I like most about this demo are the vocals. Deep but not slurred, unfortunately the lyrics aren't discernible, but the
old school death mayhem is. The blasting doesn't stop for any respite, this band must be incredible to see live. Intelligent
Death Metal solo's complete the bill, leaving you as satisfied as only a good Mosh can give. Not the longest demo, but the
excellent sound quality and totally professional packaging really makes up for it. Band Contact: Av: Cenobelino B.
Serra No. 2014, 15030-000 Jd. Canaa, S.J. Rio Preto - SP - Brasil. (Lunatic)

---------------------------------------

CRYSTAL DAWN
CRYSTAL DAWN
INDEPENDENT
(9 BATTLE AXES)

The first South African band to come from Sweden, Gothenburg to be exact? Pure "In Flames" worship Modern,
Melodic Death Metal. This demo debases all notions that you can judge a band by where they come from. As mentioned
before this music is not groundbreakingly original, although they are the first band from SA to play this music. Interesting,
catchy riffs, brilliant Black/Death Vocals and a pretty good production make this an essential purchase for completists and
all collectors of brilliant SA Metal. Somebody sign them now! C/O Riaan, P.O.Box 1852, Roodepoort, 1725,
South Africa. (Lunatic)

---------------------------------------

CYANOSIS
BLUDGEONED
INDEPENDENT
(9 BATTLE AXES)

A three track demo that will bring pride to any fan of brutal Metal. The demo consist of PROFOUND ANGUISH,
KILLING THE WILLING and BLUDGEONED. Riff changes that will rip your flesh apart. Deep vocals with those
ever welcoming screams that started to become a necessity for this type music form. The demo comes with a professional
inlay and some pictures to contribute to the insanity. Band Contact: Cyanosis, P.O.Box27728, Milwaukee,
WI 53227. (Mocke)

---------------------------------------

SARGATANAS
DEMO '95
INDEPENDENT
(8.5 BATTLE AXES)

This is what I want to hear. Death Metal aggression from the darkest pits of the unknown. Okay the sound quality of the
recording wasn't that great but I got a taped copy, so that's what I expected. This three track recording consists of
ETERNAL DARKNESS, SATANIST and SARGATANAS. The only problem I had with the demo was the guitar
solo in track three I really thought it sounded out of tune. A must for any Metalhead that has the spirit to listen to music
with balls. (Mocke)

---------------------------------------

ETERNAL
DREAMWORLD
WARMASTER RECORDS
(8 BATTLE AXES)

My Fuck, where did that voice come from? Jorge, the lead vocalist and drummer of Eternal's vocals are enough to give
Mephistopheles the shits. Slow to mid paced Doom Death with many atmospheric qualities and female vocals. The
Virginal quality of Maria, the female lead vocalist's voice adds to the doomyness of the music, although I doubt a virgin
would live long in Eternal as the demon that possesses Jorge, would have offered her up as a sacrifice to his dark lord, a
long time ago. Beautiful professional packaging with a good recording. The guitars sound a bit weak occasionally when
compared to the vocals, but the playing is amazing. Write to: Eternal, C/O Gabriel Sanchez, A.A. 59544, Medellin,
Colombia. (Lunatic)

---------------------------------------

D-RIVER
BUSHI CORE DEMO
INDEPENDENT
(8 BATTLE AXES)

Sounding suspiciously like old Groinchurn (I believe this is the first time I've been able to use a South African band as a
comparison), comes D-River or Death River if you prefer. Playing their version of Bushi Core, no that has nothing to do
with what's in their girlfriends underwear. Bushi is the ancient Japanese Samurai tradition, a type of Warrior Core if you like.
Five tracks of pure Grindcore, no samples or anything else just stripped down and let loose Japanese Grindcore. All that's
left to ask is, "What is Happening to the Japanese Youth"? This demo is free, but be cool and send something in trade, or a
dollar or two. I doubt you'll regret it. Postal Code: 213-0005, Nissinryo, 2-17-1 Kitamigata, Takatsu-Ku, Kawasaki-City,
Kanagawa. (Lunatic)

---------------------------------------

HATRED
PROMO TAPE 1998
INDEPENDENT
(8 BATTLE AXES)

Two tracks of vicious old school Thrash/Death delivered by Virginia's Hatred. absolutely phenomenal brutality evident from
the pure "Hatred" they exude. The two tracks offered are a feast for all fans of old school thrash, with touches of death
thrown in as well as blackened pieces in the vocals. To make an overall picture of sheer wickedness. The thrashing of the
guitars never stops, the drums are beaten at a frantic pace and the vocalist shrieks, growls and sings his way through the
measly 7 minutes we are given by this tape in preparation for their upcoming CD release. Band Contact: Hatred, c/o Joe
Jablonski, P.O.Box 10264, Alexandria, VA 22310, U.S.A. (Lunatic)

---------------------------------------

MORTHOR
OMEN
INDEPENDENT
(8 BATTLE AXES)

Morthor were interviewed in our previous issue as "Omen", just before the recording of this demo they changed their name to
Morthor. They did not however change their music style, and good on them. What you get when you purchase this is an
impressive blend of eighties Thrash and Speed Metal, spanning four tracks and one intro. Every track seem to pay tribute
to another form of our beloved Metal, "Anxiety" reminds me of early Kreator, "Addictive Thrill" is a less groove orientated
Sacred Reich, "Thoughts of Evil" is pure Nasty Savage, and "Madiba Hauw" is early Pestilence worship. Nobody can say
that Pretoria Metal is groundbreaking, but that's the way we like it. Perfect music for the thrash revival we are experiencing
at the moment. Available as Side B of the Funeral God/Morthor split demo. (Lunatic)

---------------------------------------

NYCTOPHOBIC
ADVANCE TRACKS FOR "STERILITY" SPLIT EP
REVENGE PRODUCTIONS
(8 BATTLE AXES)

The effect this tape has, is quite startling, if not Orgasmic. You get your brains splattered against every possible hard surface
for an undeterminable length, as time does not function well in this dimension, and when it's all over ....Silence..... You think
clearly once more! Being fairly well versed with the music of Nyctophobic, after having heard them on the "Four Ways
to Misery" Split CD and the "Kill Your Idols" comp CD, I knew what to expect and I was not disappointed. Brutal as
hell Grind core, no, you weren't listening to me I said Brutal As Hell, and I mean it. Contact Nyctophobic at Friedhofstr.
10, 67245 Lambsheim, Germany. (Lunatic)

---------------------------------------

INFECTIOUS OUTBREAK
INFANTICIDE
INDEPENDENT
(8 BATTLE AXES)

After Infectious Outbreak's Horrible, yet mildly entertaining, badly recorded debut recording on the 13 Compilation CD, I
was totally surprised to hear this demo. 10 tracks coming in at 22 minutes including the two tracks on the 13 CD "Spoken
Truth" and "Child Abuse" albeit re-recorded versions, and very well recorded versions at that. The Agathocles cover
song "No!" is also included, as appearing on the "Kill Your Idols" Agathocles tribute CD, as well as a cover of Suzi
Quatro's "She's in love with you". Excellent recording, highly professional packaging and a brilliant underlying sense of
humour, the type of thing that really makes brutal Grindcore cool, definitely worth acquiring. One bad point, watch out for
the Punk influence, straying from Metal is the root of all evil. Punk is dead!!!!! Band contact: c/o Kevin de Bruyn,
59 Akasia Street, Golfpark, Meyerton, 1960, South Africa. (Lunatic)

---------------------------------------

GRÄMLICH
ENSHROUDED IN DARKNESS
INDEPENDENT
(8 BATTLE AXES)

Music to give you the shits! There is some scary shit on this CD. Track one, 'Dethroned', is my favourite. Over 11 minutes
of Heavy despair with touches of absolute darkness. Heavy Doom Metal like early (first album) Cathedral or Paradise
Lost's first album. A lot more Thrash riffs however. Track 2 has more of a Gothic tinge, which takes away a lot of it's
appeal for me, but it's still more Metal than Gothic. If Grämlich continue along the vein of the first song, they can easily
usurp the vacated throne of the early doom masters. Contact: 6 Salford Street, Oakglen, Belville, 7530,
South Africa. (Lunatic)

---------------------------------------

INGROWING / CONTRASTIC
DEFORMED / THANATOLOGY RHYTHMS
SHINDY PRODUCTIONS
(7.75 BATTLE AXES)

Starting the demo in a whirlwind of destruction is INGROWING. Their side consists of an intro, Virus Bioforge, Just only
weeping Decadence, Sadomasochistic grind / mind Fucker, Agnosis, Pithecanthrope Syndrome and Cortex Combustion.
The grind Metal band from the Czech Republic has all the components expected from a grind band and well if this is for you
then you won't be disappointed. (7.5 battle axes)

CONTRASTIC's side called Thanatology Rhythms grabbed my attention from the beginning. Well structured riffs and mind
blowing vocals made them my favourite on the split demo. The band has a very strong death/grind feel and then there were
some riffs that would say have more of a "melodic" feel to them. This made the recording very interesting for me and I
will recommend this not only to grind Metalheads but to all that supports the cause of Metal. (8 Battle Axes) (Mocke)

METAL ORISON
PROMOTIONAL CASSETTE
INDEPENDENT
(7.5 BATTLE AXES)

This must be one of the most interesting bands I have ever met in my life. The band comes from Gaberone, Botswana's
capital city. We were fortunate enough to get the promo tape of their new album. Keeping in mind that it hasn't been
mixed yet I was still impressed to their hard rock/Heavy Metal sound. The tape kicks off with a song S.A.D.C and it has
a very strong African feel to it. The second song "Leave me alone" has a very cool bass line to it. I must be honest in saying
that I didn't enjoy all the songs that much, but that is because it's not totally the style of Metal I am into. On the tape you
will find 12 songs and when the CD arises, it will include two extra tracks. If you are a fan of rock and a older style
Heavy Metal then don't hesitate to order your copy today. (Fuck all the people that want to put a time limit to a style of
Metal, Hail to Metal !!!!!!!) Band Contact: P.O.Box 50289, Gaborone Station, Botswana. (Mocke)

PROFANACION
EL TEMPLO DE LOS GUERREROS
INDEPENDENT
(7,5 BATTLE AXES)

Black Metal with a touch of Death, 5 tracks of utter madness. They are PROCESSION, DETRAS DEL CIELO HAY
UN INFIERNO, MITOS, EL DOLOR DE HUITZILOPOCHTLI and MUNDO DE MUERTOS. Again I only had
problems with the guitar solo that sounded a bit out of tune. The best way to describe the music is fast tremolo picking
combined with a more sombre sound. Worth listening to. (J.M)

WITHERED EARTH
FORGOTTEN SUNRISE
INDEPENDENT
(7 BATTLE AXES)

A very long demo, actually more of an album that a demo. Eight full length songs of the purest Death Metal. Deep slurred
vocals with mid to fastish playing. There are some weird tribal drums on side 1, but used as the background to the Death.
If you are in the mood for something different, then those tracks will definitely do it for you. Despite the obvious talent
and good songs, I just don't seem to be able to get inspired by this music. I think if Withered Earth ever figure out what
that missing element is, they will become a force to be reckoned with in Death circles. Withered Earth, 5 Beechwood

MIDNIGHT SUN
DEMO 2 '98
INDEPENDENT
(7 BATTLE AXES)

Melodic Finish Death, with more than it's fair share of Gothenburg influences. Catchy if not repetitive riffs, played with skill
and determination. The lead lines often become irritating, but remain infectious. Production wise the demo sounds like all
demo's and like what all demo's should sound like, although the guitar sound needs work. I struggle to be inspired by this
music, but there is no denying it's good points. 4 tracks and 17 Minutes of average quality soft Death. Contact: Mikko

PUTROCORPSE
BOWEL CHRONICLES
INDEPENDENT
(7 BATTLE AXES)

As I put this tape in I was affronted by a horrible electronic intro and I thought that this would thus be more neo-death/
industrial crap. IT'S NOT! Ignore the intro and you have 5 raging tracks of Cannibal Corpse worship, death Metal. A very
loud "in your face" mix adds to the hectic quality of this demo. Disgusting lyrics, but the Monty Python samples and the
lyrics of tracks like "Revenge of the Evil Maggot", show a definite sense of humour which adds a good effect. Pro-tape
and colour cover with lyrics make up a very worthwhile package. Contact: Stucchi Marco, via Villa Paradiso 42,

GOATWAR
666
INDEPENDENT
(7 BATTLE AXES)

After a sadly industrial tinged intro, I was treated to four blistering old school Black Metal tracks, covering about 20
Minutes. Large Dark Throne tendencies are displayed in the use of repetition, controlled chaos and in the guitar tone.
The vocals however are far more guttural than Dark Throne giving GoatWAR a heavier sound without having any Death
Metal influences. The recording is chaotic and not the best quality and that's how I like it. Sound samples are used
in-between tracks which is odd for this genre, but not out of place. If you like your Black Metal to be truly underground,
then this CDR demo is for you! Contact Whore at 103-734 Alderbury Street, Victoria BC, V9A 5T4, Canada. (Lunatic)

OVERTURE TO CHAOS SPLENDOUR
INDEPENDENT
(7 BATTLE AXES)

Turn your back for a second and look what happens, 'Funeral God' have lost all except one of the original members and
have degenerated into a Dimmu Borgir clone band! A very good clone I must add, but still a clone. My version of this
demo features the rough mixes of the two tracks on the demo (i.e. without keyboards), and I find them much more enjoyable.
I would prefer to have 'Funeral God' back, but Mjöllnir will definitely appeal to more people. If you like modern Black
Metal you will like this demo. Contact: 11 Klibbe Road, Valhalla, Pretoria, 0185, South Africa. (Lunatic)

Thick, Sludgy Black Sabbath riffs, Pantera type deep vocals, Groovy Rhythms and totally faultless production. Sounds
like a nineties hardcore fans wet dream. Unfortunately not mine. By track 4, distorted vocals have entered the mix, irritating
me even more. It's impossible to ignore the heaviness of this, but it fails to ignite any emotions in me. This is the third demo
from these Brazilian four piece, 7 tracks including an intro and outro. It's safe to say that I'll never listen to this tape again!

Brothering is comprised of past members of two of the most godly 80's Metal bands from South Africa, Odyssey and
The Blast. That alone is reason for me to track down anything they do, although I must admit a severe feeling of
disappointment. Five tracks of weak doomy rock with a heavy nineties (it's that evil word again) feel to it. Jangling
undistorted electric guitars, depressing sing along arrangements and occasional heavier parts. Nothing to keep me
interested here. The obvious talent is there, I just feel that Brothering should take their own advice as their final song title
shows "Never Gonna Change", change back to what you really are; Metal..... C/O Dean, 15 Chambers Street,

Once again, not my type of music. I also don't profess to know anything about the genre, so excuse my ignorance. It seems
to me to be a sort of groovy doom, meant to be for 90's audiences. The music basically sucks but if you listen to specific
instruments you hear the talent. The guitarist rules, Heavy influences from Hendrix and Iommi, I was really impressed with
his playing. I suppose all the other instruments (including voice) would be considered brilliant by those who like the '90's
style, I don't. Way too commercial for me. This is the type of band that the record labels will be falling over their own feet
to sign, and they will be signed soon. Trust me. Fans of Monster Magnet and White Zombie, take note. Band contact:

(1 BATTLE AXE)

They say you can't judge a book by it's cover, then why is it so often possible to distinguish Metal from the rest of the drivel
that permeates this earth? As I received this tape I new I wasn't going to like it. The music is directionless boring nineties
rock. Definitely not Metal, Metal is Power, I don't feel any power while listening to this. In the bands defence however, at
least they claim that their roots are Metal, they don't praise the Smashing Pumpkins or something shit like that. I might enjoy
this more if I was a Jazz fan. Four tracks running in at around 15 minutes. Go for this if you have an open mind, remember
that in the final battle my axe will open your mind even further and you mind will flow all over the ground. Contact:

JESUS CHRIST
GOD
INDEPENDENT
(1 BATTLE AXE)

I'm actually only reviewing this for a joke. This band does not exist. Two Metalheads on the Dark Ages mailing list decided
one day to pay tribute to Festering puke. They were obviously under the influence of various chemical substances,
whether illegal or not. 14 songs in 19 minutes, most probably written and recorded in under 30 minutes. Guitar consists of
1.5 riffs played continuously, and drums played on various pieces of Tupperware. Vocals are screams, grunts and the
word Fuck. The word Suck is thrown in profusely as well to add a further dimension to the sound. OK, as I said, this is a
joke band and this is a joke review in return. Score a perfect 1 out of 1 for having such a cool sense of humour. The
track "Fuck (Everything)" actually rules. Get in touch with them to trade tapes (not this one I mean): King, Hunt

VIDEO REVIEW

WICKED ANGEL
20 MINUTES OF PAIN
RAVEN FILMS
(10 BATTLE AXES)

Wicked Angel's long awaited video is all I expected it to be. The video single for the track "20 Minutes of Pain" off their
acclaimed sophomore album "Heads will Roll", features a lengthy introduction by bassist "T. Pack" who also wrote the song
detailing his experiences of being wounded in action in the Vietnam War, and his experiences being "Medevac'ed". In
this introduction Tony explains his experience and how that resulted in his writing of the song as well as the experience of
being a Vet' in America today. The video itself features live footage of the band and footage of "Rolling Thunder", the
1998 veteran biker procession to The Wall in Washington D.C. After the video T. "Thumper" Pack expands on the Rolling
Thunder experience. To close off the video you are treated to a somewhat rough promotional video to the song "Heads
Will Roll", which provides an interesting view of Wicked Angel live. Comparisons to Metallica's "One" video are obvious,
although the interview footage and video material are of a much darker nature than "One". I feel the actual experience of
being there give this video authenticity that was lacking in "One". Not an extremely slick, high budget video production,
but the emotions expressed make up for any possible holes in the budget. I feel that this video is an essential part of
Metal History. The Video is available directly from Raven Films. Good news is that the "Heads will Roll" CD has been
licensed by Noise International, and is available through Noise in Europe (in stores or their website) and from RMG for the
rest of the world by e-mail Ravenmusic@aol.com (Lunatic)

POTHOLE
JUVENILE + LIVE
WAY COOL VIDEO
(8 BATTLE AXES)

SA's Pothole bring forth a video of their "Chaos AD" era modern thrash. One of the few Metal videos to ever emanate
from the sunny South African shores, those that have come around have always been from Cape Town, coincidence, or do
Capetonians just like looking at their ugly mugs on TV? Starting off with the promo clip for the track "Juvenile" which is
actually enjoyable. Featuring a bored Gothic Wench and plenty of Metal T-shirts. Definitely one of the better "New Metal"
video's I've seen. The live footage that follows is taken off various live shows done by Pothole, amongst others the
"Hardcore '96" gig in Jo'burg. Mostly covers are played live but I think this is due more to the fact that this is a greatest
hits video and crowd participation is always better in this country during covers. Covering South African legends
"V.O.D" with "Jou Ma se Poes" and playing tribute to Venom (Bursting Out), Sepultura (Territory, Arise), Entombed
(Out of Hand), Machine Head (Davidian) and Motörhead (Orgasmatron) with a couple of original tracks mixed in
between with interview segments. Essential for fans and collectors of SA Metal. (Lunatic)

THE GREAT KAT
DOMINATRIX + EXPO OF THE EXTREME!
TPR MUSIC
(8 BATTLE AXES)

Blood, Boobs, Candles, Chains, Crucifixion, Fishnet Stockings, Guitars, Inverted Crosses, Legs, Licking, Lingerie, Metal,
Ripping Guitar Solo's, Skulls, Slave Masters, whipping and a very loud, blood covered, screaming female. Sound like a
bad B movie to you, or a Metal video? Actually it's the latest music video from The Great Kat. For two-and-a-half minutes
your eyes are transfixed to the screen as Kat rips her way through the best track on her Guitar Goddess CD "Dominatrix".
What makes this video so good is that you really don't get the chance to think about anything. It is so intense that your eye's
don't leave the screen. You will definitely find yourself partaking in this video more than once, depending on your
perversion levels. If you find submission exciting, you will enjoy this video a lot more than I did. I suggest you head on
down to The Great Kat's Website at http://www.greatkat.com and get a taste for yourself, and no, you will not be seeing
this video on your local TV show. If there is any country out there that shows this video on the public broadcasters, then
please inform me so that I can make arrangements for my emigration. Blood, Boobs, Candles, Chains, Crucifixion,
Fishnet Stockings, Guitars, Inverted Crosses, Legs, Licking, Lingerie, Metal, Ripping... Oh, wait, you've heard that
already! This time round you get a live video of The Great Kat, which would be very cool except all it is, is 5 Minutes of
live scenes played over drums and screaming. In two pieces, Kat's music jumps out at you, but only for a couple of
seconds. Overall the video lacks cohesion. You get to see a lot of Kat Slaves being submissive to their master. Surprisingly
enough even female slaves are shown. I personally found the video to be interesting but ultimately boring. Definitely a
video where the hype overshadows the music. Next time play live music over the scenes. The video is available for
purchase or preview on the web site. (Lunatic)

A DECLARATION OF WAR AGAINST ALL ENEMIES OF METAL! A bible for us to live by. The exploits of The

as true and powerful as it was meant to be, Death to False Metal. Iron Rainbow don't allow any false influences, just pure
Metal. Two tracks of highly inspirational Doomy Riff Driven HEAVY METAL. After two spins of this disc, you will be

CRISIS
KEEP FIGHTING b/w KICK IT OUT
CRASS MENAGERIE
(10 BATTLE AXES)

One of the most amazing bands from the past that I've recently had the pleasure of being introduced to. Recorded in
+-1985 these songs were featured on their album "Kick it Out", which suffered from lousy distribution and thus never
got the attention it deserved. That makes this 7" a true "Single" in the finest tradition, enough to bring a nostalgic tear to the
eye of any ageing Metalhead. Early eighties Metal that signalled the birth of Thrash which later spawned all the aggressive
strains of Metal we love so much. With the popularity of retro these days, this LP has got to be a priority on your list of
collectibles to attain. Crisis, P.O.Box 520896, Salt Lake City. Utah 84152-0896, U.S.A. (Lunatic)

NUNSLAUGHTER / DEKAPITATOR
BLOOD ON STEEL (SPLIT 7")
INDEPENDENT
(9 BATTLE AXES)

Triumphing old school Death Thrash played by those who were there. Nunslaughter deliver three insane tracks of true
old school Death Metal. I think the worst thing about finding out about bands like this now is that you want to kick yourself
for not getting into them earlier, Nunslaughter have been doing it since 1987. This is the way I like my death, Brutal, Evil,
Fast and you can still hear the lyrics. Sounds a lot like Acheron. Very short songs for Death Metal but the message shines
through in the 5 minutes. " Bring Me The Head Of God". All I hear when I listen to Dekapitator is "Destruction" (the band as
well as the feeling). Straight, vicious old school thrash, I love thrash, again I love thrash. 6 minutes of power, in the finest
tradition. Hail!!!! Comes in a very cool glow in the Dark Vinyl, it really works. Available from Nunslaughter, 132 Old

COLD MOURNING / TWISTED TOWER DIRE
LOOKING THROUGH A SMOKING GLASS / MOURNER IN THE NETHERMISTS (SPLIT 7")
BAD POSTURE RECORDS
(8 BATTLE AXES)

Two fast rising, underground, true Metal bands on one 7". Provides a measly taster to the Doomy Old School majesty for
which these bands are becoming well known. Keeps you fit by forcing you to get up every couple of minutes to flip the
disc, but it's worth it as this is true Metal we all crave. Very stoner orientated, but not druggie music. I was most attracted
to Cold Mourning's' flamboyant solo's, but Twisted Tower Dire's vocal Melodies and riffs are in a class of their own.
Definitely destined to be a collectors item that will surface again on CD, when Michael Jackson is begging them to allow
him/it/her a supporting slot on their world tour. Shouldn't take too long. (Lunatic)

DEVIATE / FORGARDUR HELVITIS
BATTERY OF INNOCENCE (SPLIT 7")
INDEPENDENT
(AV.: 6 BATTLE AXES)

The first, and better half of this split LP is delivered by South Africa's Deviate 2 songs of slow to medium paced grinding
Death Metal, reminds me of Bolt Thrower's more recent years as well as one filler type thing called "No Means No", which
appeared on the 13 CD with the title track "Battery of Innocence". The final track "You" is a grinding wake up call for
conformists in general. Almost 10 minutes of good Death Metal, certainly worth the asking price alone (8/10). Side 2 is
Iceland's "F.H." bring forth 9 tracks of "punky" fast Grind, lyrics are indecipherable so it doesn't matter what language they
are sung in, 00 minutes, I don't like the band but that is pure ignorance (4/10). I urge you to check it out and make up your
own mind. Available from Deviate, P.O.Box 1901, Bedfordview, 2008, South Africa. (Lunatic)

THE HENCHMEN
MURDERING MIND
BAD POSTURE RECORDS
(5 BATTLE AXES)

Featuring Caper from "Righteous Pigs" and Frank from "Obituary", I was expecting a lot more from this little slab of Vinyl.
What you get is two tracks of slow, uninspiring Death/Hardcore with a modern feel. Considering that this was released in
1993, I would say that that qualifies them for a thumbs up for innovation, but I don't think so. Not something to stress
about getting. (Lunatic)

Hatred Interview

As a last second addition I was sent these CD's by the brilliant fledgling label
"Barbarians Wrath", P.O.Box 100 710, 93007 Regensburg, Germany
(No album Covers are available yet)

COUNTESS
THE REVENGE OF THE HORNED ONE
BARBARIANS WRATH
(9,5 Battle Axes)

There are few bands I would tolerate them ripping off Manowar! Countess are one of them. "Triumph of Metal" begins with
a parody of Manowar's "The Warriors Prayer", but it is done in a way that I respect as "Triumph of Metal" is a wondrous
Warcry to the ways of Metal. Starting off with a rather drawn out introduction and ending off with a "Venom" cover, this
album represents the raw beauty of extreme Metal. Sounding like a mixture of Sodom and Burzum, but in a rawer
form. A touch too much keyboards, but they never become overpowering. A band I definitely want to hear more
from. I would love to see the album cover! (Lunatic)

GRAVEWÜRM
AT THE GATES OF ARMAGEDDON
BARBARIANS WRATH
(9,5 Battle Axes)

Fucking excellent offering from Gravewürm. Brutal Black Speed Metal arising from the great gap left by the end of the
eighties. The thing that brought most tears and memories of beer filled evenings of debauchery, was the way the songs seem
to start and end out of nowhere, listen to "Obsessed by Cruelty" and you will know what I mean. I also get much more of a
thrill from an album that I can hear the lyrics on. Knowing what I'm listening to helps create the aura of evil that exists in
extreme Metal. Lets face it the vocalist may be gurgling Christian propaganda as far as you know, in some of the
bands around! You can't hear everything that is sung, but on each listen you hear a little more as you get to know the album.
In 2009 when I've listened to this album 1 000 000 times, I will eventually know it in full! That's if I'm still alive! (Lunatic)

Moshable Musings

Here is a submission by one of the rarely spotted creatures "A Metal Chick" Kirsten or Lady666 as she is known to her
friends. She makes some interesting points here, and I of course add my little bit to the end. (Because I can)

Bruises. Badges of honour in the pit. I count mine and reflect on what moshing really means. First off, I am a female. I am
either scorned when I enter the pit or all the boys go easy on me. Secondly, I am older than most in a pit at all ages shows.
Most of the boys in the pit are in their teens. Then, why do I risk bruising my tender breasts with flying sharp elbows? Here
are my reasons:

1). Moshing is a form of dance. Just like the salsa, the waltz, the swing, moshing is a way to express one's enjoyment of the
music in the form of dance.

2). Moshing is tribal. A pit begins when a group of friends get so caught up in the intense bass-heavy Metal, in all its
various forms. These legions of fans could be called a tribe. The tribe wants to praise their spiritual leaders, the band. A
lot of the motions in the pit are similar to traditional tribal dances and rituals. These core beginners encourage others
surrounding them to join in this tribal ritual. The pit grows in size and number.

3). Moshing is spiritual. When one chooses to enter the pit, one enters a focused state of mind. First is the sheer volume
of the music. Voices, cheers, general crowd noise are drowned out. As you become one with the music, you begin to
move. Those around you do the same. The music has possessed your soul. This possession reacts with the little devil, the
violent side that resides deep within all of us. The adrenaline, the endorphins, the testosterone levels increase. The smell
of sweat enters your nostrils, drawing you further in. All of your aggressions are physically worked out in a controlled
environment. And in the end, you feel spiritually cleansed. Tired, but refreshed. Sore, but relaxed.

4). Moshing is sexual. Some of the aggressions that are worked out are sexual frustrations. From my female point of view,
being in the pit is like a form of safe sex, or at least foreplay. The smell of the masculine sweat is a pheromone, calling me to
the strength and endurance of those males in the fray. My sweat mixes with their own. I emerge from the pit with a smile
of orgasmic satisfaction.

5). Moshing is controlled chaos. To the outsider, an "adult", moshing is a violent activity with a great injury potential for the
individual players. While this is somewhat true, what appears chaotic is actually controlled. Each Mosher looks out for their
fellow man. When one slips and falls, he is assisted to his feet. When it is clear that one cannot handle a particular pit, he is
advised and assisted out of the pit. Occasionally blood is seen from a split lip or nose. But such injuries are minor. In the stage
diving portion of moshing, a sense of trust is established. This is actually when most of the injuries occur. I have stage dived,
but I am only 120 pounds. When a larger body dives, that one person risks injuring those who attempt to catch him. I
recommend stage diving for those under 125 pounds and only into a tightly compressed pit. Diving into your friends is more
advisable than into the arms of people you are unfamiliar with, even though they are part of the same tribe. When one does
stage dive, one should be aware of the physical risks. Never ever go head first. Cement flooring common in most clubs is
never kind to one's skull and neck. If you do get injured, keep in mind that the choice was yours and yours alone. It is not
the club's responsibility. Most clubs now have signs posted forbidding stage diving and crowd surfing. It may even be
written on the ticket. This is for their insurance purposes. So, if you sue the club for your own carelessness in the pit, you
may put your favourite club out of business. This would be a very bad thing, especially if that club is the only host of the
hard and heavy music in your city. Despite the risk of grave physical injury, I will continue to mix my aggressive oestrogen
with the aggressive testosterone in the fray. If you think a female does not belong in the pit, think again. Anyone that can
handle the bruising bounces off of fellow flesh and bone should be welcome. And remember, in the animal kingdom, it is
often the female that hunts.

I would like to add my bit, all of this was actually thought up while in a pretty violent Mosh. I myself have various scars or
badges of honour earned with the loss of blood in Metal moshes. I feel a Mosh is battle training for us Metalheads. Modern
life is often very easy and comfortable, and very few Metalheads actually spend their days training for the final battle.
Moshing is therefore training where you form blood ties with your Brothers (and Sisters) of Metal, you learn how to handle
pain, you get fit and generally become more of an asset to the Metal Forces. It also gives you the chance to beat the living
crap out of that stupid raver that wandered into the Metal club, without upsetting the owners of the club, or your girlfriend.
Isn't life wonderful?

I <Lunatic> recently had a letter published in an online magazine "Chronicles of Chaos" (subscribe at ginof@interlog.com ).
It was a letter in response to a statement where Cradle of Filth were considering doing some cover versions. Here is my
letter as well as the reply I received. Decide for yourselves. I know I did!

Hail Coca

Thanks for a very informative 'zine. It's always interesting for me to receive!

My grudge is not with Coca but with Cradle of Filth. I have been a fan since the release of "Principles...", and have really
enjoyed the music, despite all the bad press they have received. Dani's remarks about a new album later this year were very
interesting, a Maiden cover (Fuck yes), a Manowar cover (Hail the Gods), a hardcore techno track (???????). I have just
lost mountains of respect for C.o.F, is there any one out there, except for me, that believes that C.o.F should be burnt at the
stake for a blasphemous idea like that? If they go through with it then they are truly Heretics.

Why do METAL bands feel they should do techno songs, didn't most of us start listening to Metal to escape that sort of
shit? If you share in these beliefs write to me so I can tell you more about my 'zine "The Crusader".

I don't fully agree with you Ryan. Though I love metal as you do, and hail Manowar with a MIGHTY hail!, I don't feel that
metal bands feel they should do remixes. I think the truth is quite the contrary that bands are still risking losing more respect
and fans, as C.o.F. have from you, by venturing to do techno remixes than by 'playing it safe. Though this means that bands
are being 'daring' there are two things I think about remixes and CoF doing one.

1) remixes are a shitty idea whoever does them and whatever style they are done in. I feel that if a band wants to try a new
style they should write songs in that style: e.g. Fear Factory should have "written" a techno based album instead of remixing
-old- songs.

2) CoF are, I think, remixing to try to fit in with more mainstream bands who are now all jumping on the remix bandwagon
and not because they really think it is worth it. Personally I have not lost respect for Satyricon for doing _Megiddo_ though
I never was interested in hearing it. I will await the new album with the same hot anticipation as I would have had it been the
successive follow-up to _Nemesis Divina_. I did start listening to metal to "escape that shit" and I basked in the nihilistic
rebellion for many of my teenage years but I would be careful to judge so quickly what is and isn't "acceptable" for metal
to do. 90s black and death metal are a 90s thing and for much of the 80s there was nothing quite like them. In the footnotes
to a Megadeth album Dave Mustaine, pretty metal I would say, recommended we "boycott the noise bands". His
sentiments, though objecting to a different thing, can be paralleled with yours but had we conservatively followed his we
would never have got death metal or grindcore and, some would say, the backlash, which to an extent -created- black
metal, would never have occurred: therefore you never would have got to listen to albums like _The Principle of Evil Made
Flesh_ since it is what Dave would a called "noise". I think Cradle of Filth's greatest work was their _Total Fucking
Darkness_ demo, which I will send you a copy of if you wish, but if you still like them I suggest judging each release as it
comes: I personally would not "respect" the band for being conservative although in this case I would say they'd be
smarter not to do a remix since I can't see it turning out good. The same attitude would go doubly if someone even
SUGGESTED a Manowar remix. Stick to what you like but try to open to change is my feeling.

FANZINE LISTING

After much thought on the subject I decided to start listing Fanzine's in our pages to help my fellow Metalheads to find the
best in Metal publications. I originally started reviewing them but decided against it as I am not worthy to judge the writing
skills of others, as I am not the worlds best writer. Every attempt possible has been made to ensure that only legitimate,
active publications receive attention in this column, but I cannot ensure validity. Please write first to avoid problems.
Please inform us if any mistakes creep in here.
